　　　 From a strict technical point of view, it is not necessary to use CI-4 for vehicles with national IV emission. However, why does Shell recommend the use of CI-4 grade for commercial vehicles meeting the national IV emission? The reasons are briefly as follows:

According to the lubrication guidelines for commercial vehicles issued by China Automotive Engineering Society in 2010 (above), commercial vehicles that meet the national IV emission should choose CI-4/CJ-4 grade oil products. Although this document is not a national standard, it still has strong authority and professionalism.

From the specific technical requirements, in order to achieve the national IV emission standard and meet the requirements of energy saving and emission reduction, heavy-duty diesel engines must adopt more advanced engine technologies, such as improving the shape of pistons and combustion chambers, increasing the injection pressure of fuel system, more accurate and controllable injection timing, internal or external intercooled exhaust gas recirculation technology, crankcase forced ventilation technology, variable flow exhaust gas turbocharging technology, lower oil capacity and oil circulation pressure, and so on.

This technology is not very sensitive to the ash in engine oil, so it is enough to use CI-4 grade oil. CJ-4 engine oil is sensitive to the sulfur content in diesel oil, and at present, it is still not suitable for domestic diesel environment. Moreover, domestic mainstream engine manufacturers rarely choose DPF technology path in the national IV technology path, so CJ-4 will not be the mainstream choice in the market in the short term.
